Some shooters will switch to plastic grips when it is raining. For ease of maintenance a two-piece grip will come off the gun faster. If you clean your guns frequently and you don’t want to get oils and solvents on your grips, you should remove them or protect them. One-piece or Two-Piece grip is an often asked question. That's why it's tough to replace grip panels on a SAA usually each set is custom-ground to fit, then the grip panels are cleaned up and finished and the grip frames are polished and blued, leaving no visible grind marks.Īgain, a qualified gunsmith can install 2-piece grips on you SAA's and probably do a decent job of fitting the grip panels to your grip frames without scratching up the grip panels or the grip frames and probably do it most likely at a fairly resonable (considering the effort involved) price. This is done by grind-fitting the grips and the grip frame together at the factory. Most SAA grips are fitted precisely and individually to each pistol. Not only that, but once the panels are installed, you may or may not be happy with the fit of the grip panels on the weapon.
If there is not a perfect match-up the result can be a sloppy matchup where the grip panels stay on the gun, but wiggle, because the locatiing holes in the panels had to be enlarged to fit the pin exactly. If not, therefore, a gunsmith can do it and install a fixed pin through the grip frame to fit in those blind holes in your grip panels, The grip frame locating pins must match the grip panel blind holes exactly. My Uberti SAA's, with factory one-piece grips do not have a locating pin hole in the lower front part of the grip frames to accept a locating pin, but maybe your Uberti's aso drilled. Believe me, you probably shouldn't try to do it unless you have the skills. If the grip panels do not already have such blind holes drilled in them, they must be drilled. The two grip panels each must have matching, blind locating holes (the holes do not go all the way through the grip panels) at the lower front end of each grip panel. It ain't rocket science, but it does take a steady, knowledgeable hand to do it. Since you no sabe why they move around, it's best that you have a qualified gunsmith do the work.
